SkincareSun, salt and humidity: how Southwest Florida changes your skincare routine
A routine that works in a dry climate can leave your skin congested here. What living between the beach, the humidity and the air conditioning actually does to your skin — and how we plan treatments around it in Fort Myers.
Skin in Fort Myers lives a particular life. Humid air outside, dry air conditioning inside, salt and chlorine most weekends, and strong sun almost every month of the year. Clients who move here from a drier state often tell us the same thing: the routine that worked for years suddenly stopped working. It usually is not the products. It is the climate.
Humidity is not hydration
It is the most common confusion we hear at the front desk. Humid air makes skin feel damp and look shiny, so people cut back on moisturizer — and end up dehydrated underneath while the surface stays oily. That combination is what produces congestion: blackheads, clogged pores and a rough texture across the nose and chin. If that is where your skin is, a deep cleansing facial with steam and manual extractions is usually the honest place to start, and a HydraFacial afterwards to keep it hydrated without heaviness.
The sun is why we ask about your last beach day
When you book laser hair removal or pico tattoo removal with us, one of the first things we ask about is recent sun exposure. Laser works by targeting pigment, so freshly tanned or sunburned skin changes what the device is reading and how your skin will react to it. This is not a formality — it is why the consultation comes before the first pulse, and why we may move a session rather than treat skin that is not ready. Daily sun protection between sessions is not optional in this part of Florida; it is what protects the result you are paying for.
Salt, chlorine and colored hair
The same weekend that is good for you is hard on treated hair. Salt water and chlorine strip color and dull a keratin treatment faster than anything you do at home. Rinsing your hair with fresh water before you get in the pool or the Gulf is the cheapest trick there is: hair that is already saturated with clean water absorbs far less of what is in there. After, wash with a sulfate-free shampoo and let it cool down before you go anywhere near heat.
How often to come in
Skin renews itself roughly every four to six weeks, which is why that interval is the usual rhythm for maintenance facials — not because a spa wants you back sooner. Laser hair removal and tattoo removal are different: they are courses of sessions spaced out over time, and we tell you at the consultation roughly what yours will need. What we will not do is sell you a package before we have looked at your skin.
